Youth Group Shirts: How to Design Tees Students Actually Wear
If you have ordered youth group shirts before, you already know that not every shirt is created equal.
The right tee can build unity, create excitement around your ministry, and give students something they are proud to wear beyond Wednesday night. The wrong one gets worn once, maybe.
At Sunday Cool, we have helped thousands of ministries create custom youth group shirts that students actually reach for. Here is what makes the difference and how to get it right the first time.

Need youth group shirts your students will love? Learn how to design comfortable, high-quality custom youth ministry shirts that get worn again and again.
Why Youth Group Shirts Still Matter
Youth group merch is more than apparel. When done well, it becomes part of your ministry’s culture.
Strong youth ministry shirts can:
Help students feel like they belong
Create visibility in your community
Build excitement around events and retreats
Give leaders and volunteers easy identification
Extend your ministry’s message beyond church walls
For that to happen, the shirt has to be something students genuinely want to wear.
The #1 Factor: Comfort
Before design, before colors, before anything else, comfort wins.
Today’s students are used to soft, retail-quality shirts. If a tee feels stiff or heavy, it usually gets pushed aside quickly.
That is why many ministries choose Super-Soft Tees paired with Super-Soft Ink. This water-based printing method allows the design to feel smooth and lightweight on the shirt instead of thick or rubbery.
Why Super-Soft Ink matters:
The print soaks into the fabric
The design stays breathable
The shirt keeps its soft feel
Students are more likely to wear it repeatedly
It is a small detail that makes a big difference in long-term wear.
Keep the Design Clean and Purposeful
One of the most common mistakes we see is trying to do too much in one design.
Youth group shirts that get worn most often tend to be:
Easy to read
Visually clean
Clearly connected to the group or event
Not overly crowded with text
If you are not sure where to start, using Customizable Design Templates can give you a strong foundation while still allowing your ministry to personalize the final look.
A good rule of thumb: if the message is not clear in a few seconds, simplify.
Choose Quality That Holds Up
Youth group life is active. Between camps, retreats, and weekly gatherings, shirts go through a lot.
High-quality blanks paired with Super-Soft Ink help ensure your design still looks great after repeated washes. When the print stays smooth and the shirt keeps its comfort, students naturally keep wearing it.
That ongoing wear is what turns a simple shirt into lasting ministry visibility.
Timing Your Youth Group Shirt Order
Planning ahead is always helpful, especially around big events like camps or retreats. Giving your team enough time for design and approvals can make the process smoother.
That said, one of the things ministries appreciate about Sunday Cool is our 72-hour turnaround after art approval, which provides flexibility when timelines get tight.
If you are working toward an event date, starting the conversation early is always the safest move.
Popular Uses for Youth Group Shirts
If you are exploring ideas for youth group merch, these are some of the most common and effective uses.
Weekly Youth Group Identity
Many ministries create a core shirt that students and leaders can wear throughout the year. This helps:
Build familiarity
Welcome new students
Create a consistent group identity
Youth Retreat and Event Shirts
Retreats and special events are perfect opportunities for limited-run designs. These often become keepsakes that students hold onto long after the event ends.
Summer Camp Shirts
Church summer camp remains one of the biggest drivers for custom youth shirts. Camps create shared experiences, and a well-designed tee helps capture that moment.
Volunteer and Leader Shirts
Clear, comfortable shirts for leaders and volunteers help students quickly identify safe adults while keeping your team looking unified.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Before placing your next order, watch for these common pitfalls.
Overcomplicating the design Simple and clear usually wins.
Choosing rough or heavy prints Soft, breathable printing makes a noticeable difference.
Waiting until the last minute Build in time for design and approvals when possible.
Designing without the student in mind Always ask if they would wear this outside of church.
Avoiding these alone will put your next shirt order in a much stronger position.
Ready to Create Youth Group Shirts That Last?
The right youth group shirt does more than check a box. It helps build connection, visibility, and momentum for your ministry.
When comfort, quality, and thoughtful design come together, students notice the difference.
Both tees are great—it just depends on the look you’re going for.
If your vibe is clean and classic, the Signature Super-Soft Tee is your go-to. If you're leaning relaxed, bold, and a little oversized, the Oversize Boxy Tee is calling your name.

Retro-inspired designs are having a moment, and they fit camp perfectly.
Think warm tones, vintage fonts, and throwback layouts that feel fun without trying too hard. These are the kinds of shirts students actually keep wearing.
For many churches, the most meaningful shirts are rooted in Scripture.
Whether it is a full verse or a short phrase, these designs carry the message of camp beyond the week itself. The key is keeping it readable and wearable.
Some of the most worn designs are the simplest ones. Subtle graphics, clean layouts, and intentional spacing often lead to shirts that feel more versatile.
Water based ink is the point between here and heaven. Paired with our Super Soft Tees, the nonexistent feel of our Water based ink is magical and sure to be the talk of the town with you and your group.
Here at Sunday Cool, we inventory 66 different ink colors! These colors were curated based off of customer popularity and diversity. You can view those stock ink colors below.
During the ordering process, you can reference this page to view all of our stocked ink colors. You’ll also be served up a choice of our stock inks when you submit your Art Request Form.
But what if none of the Sunday Cool Stock Inks match my design or logo? Nothing to fear! We can Pantone Match your ink to whatever code you’re needing to a 90% accuracy.
There are a few requirements to qualify for a Pantone Match on your project:
Stick to our Super Soft Signature line of apparel.
The garment color you choose must discharge vibrantly, not vintage. If you need help determining which of our inventory items discharge at which rates, check out our blog post entitled Waterbased Print Results.
Your order must include 144 units or more.
Additionally, we charge $25/match! This means if we need to match 2 ink colors to a specific code, it’ll be a $50 charge.
But how do I know which code to send you? Great question! Your organization might have a branding guide including all relevant codes and colors that set your group apart. OR you could send in your logo and ask us! Our talented Art Staff can color match the logo and tell you the code! We work often in the Pantone and HEX libraries!
As always, if you have any questions regarding our inks & matching guides, please reach out to a Sunday Cool Concierge member using the dot icon in the corner of your screen.
